Last weekend there was a Startup Weekend event in Plovdiv.
For those who don’t know,
Startup Weekend is a global network of passionate leaders and entrepreneurs on a mission to inspire, educate, and empower individuals, teams and communities. Come share ideas, form teams, and launch startups.
All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.
For me, this was the first Startup event that I joined a team and worked on an idea. I had an idea what the event is about but my expectations were exceeded.
You have a whole weekend dedicated to a single business idea. You have a team to work with on this idea so you can focus. No distractions in the office, no other duties – just you, the team and the idea. This gives you an unique experience and opportunity to clear an idea that was flowing in your mind for a while. At the end of the weekend you may have a clear business plan and possibly a working prototype.
First of all it was fun, with friendly people all around. Second, the ideas, that were pitched at the beginning, were interesting and I had several ones to choose from. And third, and probably most important, the spirit among the teams during all the event was amazing. Complete collaboration, and the most healthy competition you may see – people from different teams helping each other.
I definitely recommend this kind of events to everyone who feel they would like to build something new, change the world or just want to have a great weekend with nice people. You will not be able to start the new business in 54 hours, but you will give it a boost.
